What difference does eyeliner make?

Next up in my 'what difference does X make?' series is eyeliner.  For years and year I just wore a thick line of black eye pencil on my upper lash line and lower rim.  I wanted it to be as dark as possible and I thought it was really cool.  It still can be cool but not on me; I have fairly small eyes and it only made them look smaller.  Today I'm showing the difference that 3 different eyeliner looks make to your eyes.  Eyeliner primarily gives the appearance of thicker eyelashes but it can do so much more!
I used Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper in each of these looks.  I love it, it's very easy to use and unlike most pen liners it doesn't dry out within the first few uses.  I've had mine about 5 months and it's still going strong.

Firstly there's the simple eyeliner.  It's just a fairly thin line right in at the lash line.  It's important that you fill the gaps between each hair, it can look quite patchy and unfinished otherwise.  This emphasizes the natural shape of your eye and gives the appearance of thicker eyelashes.  It can also be done with a pencil, and smudged out, or with a dark eye shadow for a more subtle look.

Next is the classic winged liner, or cat eye.  It starts off quite thin, getting thicker towards the outside of your eye and then angling up towards the end of your brow in quite a straight line.  It elongates the eye, pulling it all upwards.  You can extend the flick as far you like.  For a more defined line you can use tape, which can also help you to get it symmetrical on each side.  This liner look is not my favourite on myself, I haven't quite mastered it yet and I don't think it suits me but it can look amazing on other people.

This is my favourite shape of eyeliner on myself.  I do quite a thick line all the way across; with my eyes open it takes up most of the lid space.  I bring the line really low down, below half way on the outer corners and then do a line that comes out almost totally horizontal.  It's quite an exaggerated shape.  It makes my eyes look a bit wider and gives me a guide to follow with eye shadow on my lower lash line (not done below but seen here, here and here).

These aren't the only shapes of eyeliner, look up 'graphic liner' for some really interesting shapes that can change the whole look of your makeup and be a focal point.  Then of course there's lining your waterline, with black, brown or something fun.  I used to line my waterline all the time but because my eyes are so sensitive these days I don't do it very often.

Eyeliner isn't essential.  I tend to do it only on the days I'm not in a hurry as it's a right pain when your eyes aren't matching up and the clock is ticking.  I do think it can make your look more polished and can definitely make your face look different.  If you have small eyes it can do wonders at making them look a bit bigger or more open.  It can make quite flat eyes look more round and vice versa.  I love eyeliner and it is very fun to play with!  I hope you go away feeling a bit inspired to play as well.
