Affordable makeup storage ideas

I've been meaning to do a post on makeup storage for months, so here it is. For those with a big collection that you've been working on for years, this post probably won't contain anything useful as you'll have already worked out what can work. I thought this might be interesting for beginners who are looking for cheap storage ideas, as the acrylic storage that is super popular right now is quite expensive (though I recommend checking out the bathroom section of TK Maxx for some affordable options).

Firstly are these little jars from Tiger, which are intended for storing spices and the like. At £1 each you can't go wrong and they have a few different colours (lid) available. I use one to store all of my lips brushes and one to store my Wayne Goss and Hakuhodo eye brushes. In the past I've also used them for storing a few cotton buds in.

This holder is a cool way to upcycle as this pretty cardboard container used to have a candle in it. It is just the right size for me to hold all of my recent lip product purchases in. I like to keep these in plain sight so that I try them out lots before relegating them to the lip drawer where they won't get as much use.

If you clean out a candle's glass jar that can work as well, I've had some really pretty frosted ones in the past. I recommend TK Maxx, again, for candles as they have ones that actually smell really strongly. I hate candles that smell if you stick your nose in them when they're unlit but don't make the room smell once lit.

More upcycling! This may just be my favourite makeup holder. I keep all of my blush, highlight and contour brushes in this cleaned-out golden syrup tin. Not only does it look cool but it makes me feel all nostalgic, taking me back to my early years when I LOVED golden syrup on porridge.

Not the prettiest of storage options but practical and very affordable, these boxes come in sets of 3 from Ikea, £1.50 for the set! There are two colours options; white, yellow and pink or white, green and blue. I use one for all of my Essence products (fairly new purchases, post coming soon), one for newish things or things I've dug out of the stash that I want to use frequently (pictured) and one for all of my full-size Lip Tars. They are great for stacking.

I got this stationary holder from Ikea, £3.50 for two of them. I've found this one on Amazon for £1.26 and there are lots similar. They are quite big and I have a few similar ones; this one for my lip pencils, one for eye pencils, one for chubby-stick-type-things and one for lip glosses. Tiger do a good selection of these types of things as well.

Other storage options I have used are flower pots (these ones from Ikea are all over youtube), large stationary sorters, tea or biscuit tins. To sort makeup into sections within my drawers I use stationary dividers/drawer inserts like this one or this one.

If you are storing brushes in a large container and want them to stand upright, then decorative sand or pebbles can do the job, although so can rice if you want a budget alternative. I've had a lot of luck with places like The Range, Dunelm Mill and the aforementioned TK Maxx, though sometimes good things pop up in supermarket home/office sections too.
